community after the Joplin Tornado

00:44 Mar 29 2015 Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri, United States of America

Description
Closing remarks of National Geographic documentary on the Joplin, MO 2011 tornado: "The safest place in my world was my home. The place where I felt the most like myself was gone, and you mourn for the loss of that. But I can't believe how lucky I am that my husband's alive and I'm alive and my daughter's alive. It was a bad experience for sure but, I feel very confident in the community. it's easy to become very cynical and not believe that anybody has anybody else's best interests at heart. This experience allowed me to feel the very opposite of that. And there's so much hope in that. Because people really, people from all over the country put aside their lives to just come down here and do what they could for us and I just felt like my neighborhood was expanded to the whole country. And that's very humbling." -Mariah Kissel Callari
