A friend's complaint about dead birds on her property sparked Rachel Carson's environmental research. She finished "Silent Spring" despite breast cancer and a masectomy.The book was published September 27, 1962. Ms. Carson died 18 months later. But the impact of her book invigorated the environmntal movement & led to founding the EPA in the US.
